Do Singers Need Vocal Exercises?

What do vocal exercises do? When practiced correctly, they enable you to improve your voice as you sing the exercises which may consist of scales in different keys that may have you reach notes getting progressively higher. You should use good breath support while you do the exercises as it will help project your voice more strongly.

The main reason for doing vocal exercises is to warm up our vocal cords. It’s the same as stretching our body muscles before a workout. You can’t get a throat cramp but you can strain your vocal cords, and since we all talk to communicate you need to treat your vocal cords with care.

As stated before breathing is the most important part of a vocal exercise.The Grammy winning artist Kenny G holds a world record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest note held, he held an E-flat for 45 minutes and 12 seconds. When asked how he did it he explained that he breathes through his nose and allows the air to fill his lungs and he transfers that air to his mouth. Breathing is key to a singer or a wind instrument player, because people who do not practice will never be very good.

Some vocal coaches have their students stand with their feet together and their arms stretched out as this allows you balance yourself so you can concentrate on your stance as well as your delivery. This doesn’t mean that when singing you should be stiff or rigid, you should be relaxed with your shoulders sloping. If you’ve seen singers that sing with rage or anger they are all tensed up and use their energy to deliver their voice thus burning themselves out faster than somebody who looks relaxed.

Singing is like speaking just done in a way that makes you recognize the words in a more relaxed way. When somebody talks they raise their voice when they’re excited or lower it when they are comfortable. You as a singer need to practice this method by adding voice to poems or lyrics.

Practice recording your voice and try to sing along with it. Listen to yourself so that you hear the imperfections in your voice and learn where you need to improve. Also try to sing along with your favorite singer, but don’t try to copy exactly their style as you want your own unique voice.

When you practice every day, your voice will improve gradually in time as long as you don’t overdo it. Some singers are more gifted than others and can hold notes longer and singer the higher pitches better, but you can definitely improve yourself with determination and hard work. Realize that the foundation of voice are most important and you must know what they are and practice them daily, if possible.

Whether you are studying with a voice teacher or doing a self-pace singing course make sure you practice your voice exercises as they are fundamental to a singer’s development as a professional. You don’t have to sing all exercises in one session, but do get a few exercises done. As a result, listeners will note that you sound more polished and seem like a better singer than others.
